GALP Mallorca, in collaboration with the Port Authority of the Balearic Islands and Palma City Council, is organising the 2nd Sustainable Fisheries Conference of Palma<\/strong>, which will take place on 1 and 2 October at the Port Center of the Port Authority of the Balearic Islands<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

Following the success of the first edition, the conference has established itself as a meeting point for fisheries professionals, researchers, public administrations and organisations linked to the maritime sector. Its aim is to share experiences, reflect on the current challenges facing fisheries, and showcase initiatives that contribute to the environmental, social and economic sustainability of fishing activities.<\/p>\n\n

The first day, on 1 October<\/strong>, will feature institutional representatives including Antoni Maria Grau, Director General for Fisheries of the Government of the Balearic Islands, and Domingo Bonn\u00edn, President of the Sant Pere de Palma Fishers’ Guild.<\/p>\n\n

Throughout the morning, participants will explore topics such as the Marine Conservation Plan of the Balearic Islands Government, experiences from other Fisheries Local Action Groups (FLAGs), the day-to-day reality of professional fishers, and a range of projects promoted by GALP Mallorca in collaboration with local organisations.<\/p>\n\n

Highlights of the programme will also include the presentation of a device designed to reduce accidental shark bycatch, as well as contributions from representatives of the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO-CSIC) and the Mediterranean Institute for Advanced Studies (CSIC-UIB), who will provide their scientific perspective on the conservation of marine resources.<\/p>\n\n

The second day, on 2 October<\/strong>, will adopt a more participatory format, featuring several workshops focused on some of the sector\u2019s main challenges. The first will address generational renewal in fisheries<\/strong>, with contributions from fishers\u2019 guilds, maritime vocational training centres and fishermen. A second workshop will examine strategies to improve the marketing of Mallorcan fish products<\/strong>, bringing together the perspectives of producers, distributors and retailers.<\/p>\n\n

Applied fisheries science will also take centre stage in a third discussion on how research can contribute to improved fisheries management and sustainability. Finally, the different FLAGs of the Balearic Islands will share experiences and discuss the possibility of developing a joint cooperation project.<\/p>\n\n

The conference is free of charge<\/strong>, although prior registration is required via info@galmallorca.org<\/strong>. The programme is still provisional and will be updated with new speakers and contributions over the coming weeks.<\/p>\n\n

GALP Mallorca invites fisheries professionals, students, researchers and anyone interested in the future of fisheries and the marine environment to take part in this second edition, which seeks to further strengthen the links between knowledge, innovation and sustainable fishing activity. \n<\/p>\n\n
