On May 16 and 17, 2025, Palma hosted the 1st Sustainable Fishing Conference, jointly organized by Palma City Council, the Ports of the Balearic Islands, and the FLAG Mallorca<\/strong>. The conference provided a platform for raising awareness of the fishing sector, reflecting on the current and future status of sustainable fishing, and promoting mutual understanding and synergies among the various stakeholders involved.<\/p>\n\n Throughout the first day,<\/strong> topics such as the sustainable management of marine resources, the challenges of generational change in the fishing sector, innovation in fishing gear and marketing, and the role of science in marine conservation were discussed. One of the most popular presentations was the one explaining how to become a fishing boatman, providing a practical and insightful look at the training, requirements, and career opportunities within the sector.<\/p>\n\n The second day took place in the Sardine Fair’s Expo Zone, a space open to the public that combined educational activities, gastronomy, and recreational activities. One of the highlights of the morning was the guided tour of the Palma stage, where attendees learned firsthand how the auction system works, the work of the guilds, and the importance of local produce. In the exhibition area, several organizations set up information booths to showcase their work, such as IMEDEA, which offered an educational exhibition on marine ecosystems and climate change, while other organizations, such as the Palma Aquarium Foundation, organized educational workshops for children. Initiatives related to coastal cleanup, marine conservation, traditional crafts, and local cuisine were also present.<\/p>\n\n From the Mallorca GALP, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to all the speakers, collaborating entities, and attendees for their involvement and efforts.
